Importance of Following Factory-Recommended Vehicle Maintenance Guidelines

There is no question that having a car can be exciting, it can be fun and thrilling, not to mention ridiculously convenient. However, what a majority of people refuse to understand is that owning a car does come with hefty responsibilities and vehicle maintenance makes a large part of that. Apart from paying your insurance premiums and making sure that your vehicle remains emission free, you car’s  maintenance is quite important too. Frequent maintenance is the lifeblood of any vehicle, enhancing its performance and durability.

Why You Must Not Neglect the Manufacturer’s Guidelines for Vehicle Maintenance

When the vehicle that you drive was manufactured, it was made to perform under particular mechanical stipulations. Operating a car does sound easy; you have to realize that in order to ensure it keeps on performing you will have to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines in the booklet. If you neglect to follow the instructions of the manufacturer, your car’s core components will stand a high chance of malfunctioning and will need costly replacements. The manufacturer’s maintenance routine is all about convenience and cost-effectiveness.

It outlines all basic as well as fundamental maintenance practices, and when you should replace what component. A pretty handy document indeed. For example, a lot people have formed a costly habit of changing their oil every 2,000 to 3,000 miles, which is absurd, not to mention costly! The manufacturers, however, recommend that car owners should change their oil after every 5,000 to 7,000 miles.

Similarly, manufacturers also recommend changing your engine’s air filter, the air filter for the cabin, tire rotation and coolant after every 60,000 miles or 2 years. As you can see, vehicle maintenance guidelines given by the manufacturers are hassle-free and quite realistic.

Types of Maintenance

In the industry for auto repair and manufacturing, there are two types of maintenance. Normal and severe. Basically, the form of maintenance that your car requires every month or so depends on the type of driving you do.

Severe Maintenance – if you drive on bumpy terrain or indulge in off-roading more often or if you drive in extreme temperatures – this is the perfect type of maintenance for you. Severe maintenance is recommended to be performed every month and consists of an increase in frequency when changing vehicle fluids.

Normal Maintenance – Normal vehicle maintenance is all about getting your car services exactly as per the guidelines of the manufacturer. This type of maintenance is for people who drive a short distance to travel to work, have driven their vehicle for less than 12,000 miles and don’t indulge in a lot of stop and go driving.

The Bottom Line

All in all, safety always comes first, and adequate auto maintenance is all about ensuring safety – which is why it is pertinent that you form a maintenance routine as per the manufacturer.
